Alanis Obomsawin - “First Lady of First Nations Film”

May 15, 2008

That’s the title that Tom Perlmutter, Commissioner of the National Film Board (NFB) of Canada gave to filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin.

Obomsawin’s film and work offers dignity and respect to the politics and stories of First Nations People. Her films were integral in raising First Nations rights and land rights in Canada to the forefront of political attention.

This is a spring of accolades for Obomsawin. She will be receiving the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement.

It seems that great things are happening in a flush for Obomsawin. New York’s MOMA is focusing on a retrospective of her films, from May 14th – 26th. Also, three of her films will be showing at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

I celebrate here this artist’s great accomplishments, her work and devotion to visual storytelling and First Nations integrity.
